3TRIÚR (In Search of Musical Form) follows the ongoing collaboration between three of Ireland’s most distinguished traditional musicians, Peadar Ó Riada, Martin Hayes & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, in a swirling exploration of the creative process.

It’s rare for musicians of this calibre to allow a filmmaker such extensive access to the intimate, private, often painful creative process, but that’s exactly what they’ve agreed to do for this documentary: an incredible opportunity to view the tradition from three unique perspectives and generations. The musicality of the documentary is complemented by an intimate, personal dimension, given the close bonds that have have grown steadily between the three as they swap stories, thoughts, ideas and tunes in a swirling exploration of the creative process that journeys to the “heart of our music”.

The film begins with the three gathering in April 2009 – before the idea of Triúr even existed – to explore what Martin described as ‘their shared understanding of the music’ and follows their journey over three years; ending on the stage of the historical Abbey Theatre in Dublin in February 2012. The work “sees the three musicians in a sublime communion with the music . . . that achieves such an orchestral sound (it) may echo for years to come” (Irish Times Review).

Dreamtime Revisited, an award winning film by Dónal Ó Céilleachair and Julius Ziz, is a ‘Walkabout in Dreamtime Ireland’ inspired by the works of Irish writer, poet and philosopher, John Moriarty considered by many “as a major writer, comparable to Yeats, Joyce and Beckett” (Guardian Obituary 2007).

Dreamtime Revisited weaves together contemporary and archive material in a labyrinthine invocation of his “dream-vision” of Ireland; exploring the spiritual and poetic dimensions of its landscape and people.

The film was released theatrically in Ireland in 2012.

Scéalta Mhuscraí (Muskerry Stories) comes from Cinema Workshops for adults and seniors, conducted by NY and Ireland based filmmaker Dónal Ó Céilleachair who was based in the Muskerry Gaeltacht working on a number of film projects.

Participants were given an entire overview of the filmmaking process from story conception right through to editing and production with Ó Céilleachair showing excerpts from his own international work in experimental, documentary and fiction filmmaking.

There was an onus on how artists make films with a particular focus on the experimental films of Ó Céilleachair, filmmakers he has collaborated with and on international filmmakers such as Andrei Tarkovsky.

Participants learned the basic language of filmmaking and thinking visually to tell stories, and learned how to work with basic filming equipment. Participants brought story ideas to the workshops which were then developed into film scripts. Each participant was asked to write down their dreams in a dream diary which were then shared and discussed throughout the workshop process with the idea that these dreams would eventually influence the films being made.

The workshops took place at Ionad Cultúrtha over 8 weeks in the Autumn/Winter of 2010. There were over 15 participants in total and 6 completed films were produced in the final process. The films were shot during the course of the 8 weeks of workshops and edited in Spring, 2011 to be ready for the May 12th Premiere date.

Each film relates different stories from the Muskerry Gaeltacht dealing with themes of immigration as in Mary Joan McCarthy’s ‘Dearthair/Brother’, or exploring challenges in speaking the Irish language as in Hannie Corkery’s ‘Taibhreamh/Dream’. Other films deal with the rich culture of the region including a look at some of the almost 10,000 archaelogical sites of mid-cork in Helen Willems ‘Sraith/Cycle’ or the local Bardic School tradition in Betsy Ní Suibhne’s ‘File/Poet’. Áine Bean Uí hAirtnéada’s film Mórathrú (Upheaval) looks back at the tragic flooding of the Gearagh region while Catherine Ketch follows a more experimental approach to documenting the area in ‘Amuigh/Outside’.

These are all first films from first time filmmakers; a courageous achievement for each of the participants, and the films are 100% made in the Muskerry region of Mid-Cork, with music from local musicians including Ger Wolfe and Fiona Kelleher.

Inspired by Stan Brakhage’s seminal film Mothlight from 1963, Butterfly Light is a film made by Dónal Ó Céilleachair during his time as Artist/Filmmaker-in-Residence in the Cork Gaeltacht made in workshops with over 150 local kids.

Butterfly Light, together with the accompanying exhibition and documentary ‘Moving Shapes of Wisdom’ is a film project made during Dónal’s time as Artist-in-Residence at the Ionad Culturtha Cultural Centre in the Muskerry Gaeltacht in 2008.

Inspired by Stan Brakhage’s seminal film Mothlight from 1963, Dónal conducted workshops in the five national schools of the Muskerry Gaeltacht as part of his residency with over 160 students in the five villages of the area.

The workshops introduced students to the fundamentals of cinema, animation and experimental film techniques by working directly with strips and reels of 16mm and 35mm film. For the purpose of the resulting film, students were given 24 frames (1 second long) of clear 35mm film each, which they decorated with local flora and the wings of dead butterflies. By joining together each strip of film from the students the resulting film is 150 seconds long.

The resulting film and accompanying exhibition was exhibited at the Ionad Culturtha Cultural Centre and at the Cork Film Festival in 2008 and the 35mm print of Butterfly Light premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, 2009 and went on to screen at festivals worldwide.

The film is accompanied by an exhibition/installation comprising:

A. Ten (10) transparent Perspex panels each containing sixteen (16) original strips of film (1 example above – 160 in total) laid out in four horizontal rows. Each Panel is approx. 6’3” long x 12” high (1,900mm long x 285mm high).

B. Plus 2 Films Playing on a Continuous Loop DVD in the space:

A collaborative expanded cinema installation inspired by Warhol’s seminal film Kiss (1963);
i, of k
is a contemporary exploration of the cinematic situation developed within
an interpretative framework of Warhol’s early films.

i, of k comprises a central dual screen projection of a 52 minute film. The 52 minute film comprises thirteen 3 1/2 minute reels of 16mm film each shot by a NY based documentary, underground or experimental video or film maker, making their own contemporary interpretations inspired by Warhol’s film Kiss from 1963. The central dual screen projection of the film is flanked on either side by video quadrants that document the making of the film and the setting where the film was made.

By integrating the video quadrants in the panorama of i, of k the audience is subjected to documentation of the making of i, of k while simultaneously experiencing the completed film. In the duration of watching the 52 minute expanded cinema work the audience experiences almost 8 hours of ‘real’ time.

This mixed media panorama of the moving image contrasts the historical cinematic quality of silent film with the contemporary and immediate quality of video; confronting the viewer simultaneously with the tensions manifest between the analogue nature of celluloid (cinema) and the digital nature of video (television).

By isolating and re-interpreting the elements that were formally compressed in Warhol’s seminal film Kiss (1963) into a 10-screen projection – i, of k explores the relationships and tensions between film as fiction and film as document, the spontaneous and the rehearsed, between reel time and real time in a mixed media panorama of contemporary kissing practices.

The Collaborative Nature of the Project
For i, of k, film and video makers from different backgrounds were invited to collaborate in the shooting by taking on one scene/camera roll as a personal project and shooting it at the Kiss Factory happening (see below).

The panorama of images included in i, of k are a result of the collaborative contributions of eighteen video and film makers working within, and reacting to, clearly defined parameters set out as an interpretative framework of Warhol’s filmmaking strategies.

The Setting
Kiss Factory was conceived as an evocation of the spirit of the 1960’s pop scene, featuring live bands, D.J.s, a screening of EPI – Exploding Plastic Inevitable, an intermittent screening of Warhol’s Kiss in one part of the space together with a live persistence of images and kaleidoscopic ambient film, slide and cosmic material projections throughout the night by the expanded cinema collective kinoSonik.

The event took place on December 16, 2000 at an underground club on Williamsburg’s south side in Brooklyn; the inimitable Rubulad, and was promoted via word-of-mouth and limited card invite only. Kiss Factory was attended by over 600 people.

Monitors were placed throughout the space with live transmissions of images from both the ‘making of i, of k’ and the Superstar Screen tests which were mixed live by Sherry Shadow.

Shooting i, of k as the centerpiece of this event introduced the very process of filmmaking into the public sphere, embracing the key elements of chance and the chaos of production in the process (i, of k was the raison d’etre of the event and vice versa – money raised from the door would pay for the making of the film).
