‘Droichead na nGael’ (Bridge of the Gaels) is a unique event, that took place on the legendary island of Iona, bringing together representatives from the Gaelic speaking nations of Ireland and Scotland to share in a dialogue of shared language, heritage, spirituality and culture in the year that marked the 1,450th anniversary of the founding of Iona Abbey.

Le linn Iúil 2013, gairmeadh Gaeil chun oileán ársa Í chun droichead do thógáil idir an Náisiún Gaelach pé áit áit ina bhfuilid scaipithe ar fuaid an domhain, trí áireamh is cúntas do thabhairt ar a stair, a dteanga, a spioradálthacht, a gcruthaitheacht, is a n-oidhreacht fónta ar ócáid cheiliúradh 1450 bliain ar chéad theacht Cholmcille chun an Oileáin.

B’é Peadar Ó Riada agus Iontaoibheas Fódhla a ghairm an ócáid le cúnamh ó ‘Colmcille – Éire is Alba’ agus Pobal Í. In July, 2013, the Gaels of Ireland and Scotland were called together to bridge the globally scattered Gaelic Nation of today, by bearing witness to their shared history, language, spirituality, creativity and heritage on the occasion of the celebration of the 1,450th anniversary of Colmcille’s first landing on the sacred Isle of Iona.

The occasion was organised by Peadar Ó Riada and the Fódhla Foundation trust, with the support of Colmcille-Éirinn is Alba and the Iona Community. Both wings of the Gaelic Nations of Ireland and Scotland were present at the gathering, including representatives of the poets and musicians, spiritual and public leaders, singers and choirs, all in the presence of the President of Ireland.

The occasion includes presentations, performances and talks in Irish (Gaeilge), Scottish Gaelic (Gaidhlig) and English commemorating and exploring the rich cultural, historical, spiritual and creative connections between Ireland and Scotland, with special emphasis on the role of Colmcille. Tadhg McSweeney, Painter

A Film Portrait | Ireland | 2014 | 23 mins | PAL | Colour + B&W | 16:9

An intimate portrait of a unique Irish artist, who continues to find extraordinary beauty in the absolutely ordinary, while illuminating a whole other way of looking at the world around us, in the process.

Winner of The Cork Shorts Award – Cork Film Festival, 2014
“We are delighted to award filmmaker Dónal Ó Céilleachair for the outstanding way in which he captures the talent and spirit of this artist.”  – The Festival Jury

I am sad to share the news that Tadhg McSweeney left us on Wednesday, August 29th, 2018.

I was privileged to make two films with Tadhg over the years – he also appears in my Irish-language Artist Portrait film From The Land of Múscraí (Ó Dhúthaigh Mhúscraí) – and you could never leave his presence without feeling that you had taken another step further into the multi-faceted labyrinth of this incredible universe of ours; such was the breadth of his vision, so far-reaching was the depth of his ever-inquisitive understanding.

I will miss those pilgrimages of exploration to his home on Cnoc Sathairn (Saturn Hill).

Tadhg McSweeney (27 February, 1936 – 29 August, 2018) – Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam.

The Muskerry West Cork Gaeltacht has a legendary reputation for its traditional music and for its poetry. But amongst the community there are also a flourishing and growing number of artists working there, inspired by the magic of the surrounding landscape and it’s cultural heritage.

Described by Con Houlihan as “one of our leading painters”, Tadhg McSweeney was born here in 1936. He is a well-traveled artist – having trained in Dublin, London and in Italy – and he has held solo exhibitions throughout the world; honing and perfecting his craft for over 50 years. But despite the lure of the greater world, Tadhg continues to reside in the area, finding apparently endless inspiration in the natural landscapes and themes of his home surroundings.

Brian Lynch writes ‘The simplicity, the stubbornness, the freshness, and the joy he finds in nature are facets of an ongoing self-portrait, expressions of the soul of an original artistic personality. He is in the tradition of Irish genius, but there is no genius like him. Tadhg McSweeney is unique’.

‘A work of great creative synergy and intimacy (with) a meditative aura’
Matt Micucci, Cinecola

Founded by legendary Irish composer Seán Ó Riada in 1963 – and continued after his death in 1971 to this day by his son Peadar – Cór Chúil Aodha (The Coolea Men’s Choir) occupies a legendary place in Irish music and embodies the spirit of an area that is historically rich in both poetry and music.

With current members that include local farmers, carpenters, teachers, civil servants and businessmen, fathers, sons and grandchildren; the choir represents a vibrant cross-section of the community and a diversity of authentic contemporary voices.

This intimate documentary follows the life of the choir over an 8-week period; charting its weekly trials and tribulations – under Peadar’s watchful direction – culminating in a historical visit to the renowned island of Iona in Scotland with President Michael D. Higgins in the year of the choir’s 50th anniversary.

Aisling Gheal (Bright Vision)

With Music by Seán Ó Riada & Peadar Ó Riada
AISLING GHEAL follows the women singers of the Muskerry Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking region) of West County Cork on a journey to the heart of the Sean-nós (ancient-style) singing tradition with a focus on the relationship between acclaimed singer and teacher Máire Ní Chéileachair and young student Shahira Apraku (of German/Ghanese heritage).

“Utterly beguiling from beginning to end . . .”
Ross Whitaker – Stranger than Fiction Documentary Festival

Selected to represent Ireland at the 2013 EU Film Festival of India & Nepal.

Sean-nós (old style unaccompanied traditional Irish singing) is considered to be the holy grail of Irish traditional music and the Sean-nós singer is the living embodiment of this tradition that stretches back, in an almost unbroken lineage, to a time before the fall of the Gaelic nobility.

AISLING GHEAL (Bright Vision) is one of the most revered songs from the Munster Sean-nós singing tradition and is also the name of the local scheme – run by the women in the film – responsible for passing the tradition onto the younger generations.

The film follows the weekly workings of the scheme over a year-long period and in particular the relationship between renowned singer and teacher Máire Ní Chéilleachair and one of her students: 11-year old Shahira Apraku (of African /German heritage).

Máire and Shahira’s journey together, the struggles of the women, the songs of the Sean-nós and the flow of the Sullane river provide parallel intersecting narrative vehicles for this documentary, yielding insights into this very precious part of our culture in the course of its unfolding, and challenging some of our key contemporary notions of ‘Irishness’ in the process.

This is the 2nd film in Dónal Ó Céilleachair’s ‘Irish Music Trilogy’ that includes 3-TRIÚR (2012), Aisling Gheal (2013) & From Coolea to Iona (2014).
